FRED HESS

Contributor - Tom Brittan VIA S/Sgt. Fred Hess (Waist Gunner, kneeling far left)

Taken before departure from the USA. Flown to England to be delivered to the 448th BG by Pilot 2/Lt. Lt. Russell C. Anderson and crew (who were assigned to the 453rd BG). The 448th BG was flying with the 93rd BG on the fateful day (16 Aug 44) but was never assigned to that Group. The sole survivor on that mission was Leo Stephens, who was wounded by flak in the knee, taken POW, and flew home on 25 May 45.
