The diagonal-stripe-on-silver represented the third Group of
the 14th Bomb Wing. The 492nd used this tail as a member of the 14th Wing until
the 492nd was replaced by the 491st in August of 1944. Then the 491st used the
same marking since it was now the third Group of the 14th Wing.
