Caption Reads: "The snow-covered slopes of Mt. Vesuvius here form a cratered-cone for the volcanic smoke and steam rising lazily skyward as a B-24 Liberator bomber of the U.S. Army Air Forces circles above--thus bringing together one of nature's oldest and man's newest wonders. The plane, named The BLUE STREAK, is on a mission over Italy, having completed 1,058 hours of combat flying, during which her gunners brought down 23 enemy fighters without the loss of any member of her crew, although her fame is pitted with 150 flak holes. The BLUE STREAK will return to the U.S. for a tour of industrial war plants."
