Crew picked up the A/C at Mitchel Field, New York late in 1943 and flew to Italy in late Dec 43 - Jan 44. According to my Uncle Allen Darilek, she was named in Mar 44. They made their first high altitude raid to Ploesti in Apr 44, and went back to Ploesti several times. On one occasion coming back on 2 engines – "CHERRY shot to hell." No crew members were seriously hurt or wounded, although two of the gunners suffered frostbite. All crew received 50 mission credits, finishing up in Jul 44. Ship survived the war and was salvaged in Italy.
