Character from "Terry and the Pirates Comics" (Creator - Milt Caniff)
Info Contributor - Steve James
My Father, Tom James, was the Technical Sergeant. The entire crew was awarded the DFC for a mission against Ani Jima 6 Nov 44. They flew 40 missions together from 29 Oct 44 to 21 Apr 45. My understanding is that First Lt. Stambaugh (Pilot) was KIA soon after they completed their 40 missions as he was orienting new crews. That is long remembered stories from my father, and I have no records to back that up. First Lt. Irving Merkin - Co-pilot; First Lt. Alexander Ellis - Bombardier/Navigator; SSGT Walter Hoffman - Gunner; SSGT James W. Tedder - Gunner.
