My Grandfather, Robert Speck, was the Top Turret Gunner and Flight Mechanic while in Italy between 1942-44. While there was a popular gospel song at the time called "Great Speckled Bird" (by Roy Acuff), family legend has told us that the plane was named this because of all the aluminum patching done by Grandpa to patch up the bullet holes, giving the plane a "speckled" look.
