2nd Lt. Hugh A. Shalvoy (pilot) is waiting for medical assistance with a badly broken back and a broken arm. He crashed at the end of the runway at Bury St. Edmunds while returning from the 492nd Bomb Group's first operational mission, bombing the marshaling yards at Mulhouse, France. Every crew member was injured in the crash but only one, 2Lt. George D. Metzger (navigator), was killed.
