Left the U.S. in late May, 1942, on their way to China, to bomb Japan. Stopping in Fayid, Egypt, she took part in the first Ploesti mission 12 Jun 42, and the attack on the Italian fleet 15 Jun 42. Later assigned to the 1st Provisional Bomb Group (1P) and then transferred to 9th AF / 376th BG / 512th BS with nose #27. She flew many missions against Tobruk and Benghazi, as part of the effort to deny Rommel supplies for his Afrika Korps. In early 1943, YANK suffered a nose gear failure, and in February, was moved to Gura, Eritrea for repairs.
